BIBLE STUDIES

Bible Studies has taken a break.  Join us again on January 15th in the Sanctuary at 3:00.

During Fall 2022 Adults are engaged in a study of Isaiah 1-39 which is led by the pastor, and is a book in the series entitled Westminster Bible Companion.  The author of the book is Walter Brueggemann.

In this volume, Walter Brueggemann writes on Isaiah 1-39, which many scholars believe had a single author, Isaiah, of the eighth century BCE, who wrote in the context of the Assyrian empire between 742 and 701.

WOMEN OF FAITH

From September through May, Women of Faith meet weekly to learn and discuss a particular Biblical book.  For Fall, 2022, the women will study Matthew by Thomas Long.  The book is a part of the Westminister Bible Companion series.

The original audience for the Gospel of Matthew included converts from Judaism who wrestled with how to be faithful to Jesus Christ under difficult circumstances in a changing world. The Gospel of Matthew became a first-aid manual for this church in the midst of a struggle.

Thomas Long identifies this first audience and its faith within the social and religious context of the day and clarifies the structure of the Gospel. Providing examples of contemporary relevance, Long helps today’s reader discern the significance of this guide for faithful living in today’s church.

From September through May, Presbyterian Women meet monthly to discuss a current publication from the PC(USA).

Celebrating Sabbath: Accepting God’s Gift of Rest and Delight by Carol M. Bechtel is the study for the 2022-2023 year.

In the nine lessons of this Bible study—with passages from Genesis, Exodus, Deuteronomy, Isaiah, Matthew, Luke, and Acts—Sabbath will be considered

  • as a celebration, not a day of dreary formality
  • as God’s intent for all of creation and that includes busy women too
  • as one day of the week, perhaps a Sunday
  • as a time to surrender unhealthy striving and frantic busyness, and instead trust God will provide
  • as a reminder that life is precious and working too much is against God’s plans for our precious lives
  • as a day devoted to community and justice and not exclusively to self-care

Ultimately, Sabbath reminds us to honor God who honors us by giving us a day each week to reset our pace, our priorities, and our lives.

ZOOM FELLOWSHIP GROUPS

Currently there are 3 separate groups that meet weekly over Zoom to discuss daily readings from the current monthly edition of These Days.
